More Furling Problems

I have a 2007 Hunter 38 with a Selden furling main. I have put up and removed the sails before without problem. I took the sails down for Irene and re rigged them shortly after. The main was hanging up and required more pull than before to unfurl it. At first I thought the outhaul pulley system was not installed correctly, and re routed the outhaul several ways and compared it to other hunters and the manual to ensure that it is correct. It furls easily, and i keep tension on the outhaul. I actually grabbed the clew by hand and the sail unfurls without tension. Further inspection shows the outhaul is putting tension on the leech, and not the foot of the sail. The sail seems to lay higher on the boom than before, and this would explain why the tension is on the leech, and not the foot. I have a rigid vang, and the toping lift is at its usual length. I took down the sail two additional times to ensure that it was raised correctly. I called selden several times,but no response as of yet. Any ideas?

I have a similar problem with my 2009 H36 where the outhaul stops a few inches short about 50 % of the time leaving the foot loose. I have disassembled the outhaul car, lubes, and reassembled. I have adjusted the leech line and rod kicker without much difference. It seems that the outhaul line angle of pull changes dramatically during the last f12" of travel causing the footto jam. My solution is to tighten the outhaul then furl the main a few inches until the foot shape is desirable.

Do either of you have full length vertical battens in your main sail?

Make sure the vang and the main sheet are loose. The boom should ride up while the sail is coming out. Set the main sheet after the sail is out.

There should be an adjustable stop on the top of the boom that prevents the clew outhaul car from moving too far forward. Try moving the stop aft so that it's about as far back on the boom as the attachment point for the rigid vang. This will make the pull on the out-haul a little more horizontal and should improve things.

Selden guys have been away at the Annapolis Boat show and so not in the office to take calls. They are great guys to do business with and now that they are probably back in Charleston, they can help you (unless they are headed for another boat show). Call them again, or find a regional Selden/Furlex service center who can help. Anyone handling Selden/Furlex gear attends their school and so should be knowledgeable. I have had nothing but success with Selden products. I think it is very good equipment.

The main has no battens and both the leech and vang are loose. The issue is the outhaul line has a direction of pull that is straight down the last few inches relative to the car. It is possible to head up allowing the main to luff, release outhaul tension, stand on the cockpit rail seat and pull the car by hand until the foot of the sail is relatively straight then tighten the outhaul line.

.... So to finish my thought. It appears that the size of the main, at least the length of the foot, is too large for the boom length.

I looked at my set up again. It seems that the big back washer was placed upside down on the car. This helped a bit. I'll try moving the car stop further aft on the boom to see if that helps as well
