I just doubled the house battery capacity on my 1984 C36 (Mk. I), and when the dust cleared, my separate engine starting battery was sitting on the cabin sole. Oops! Anyway, the story is this. My first season with the boat, 2001, I installed two Group 24 75AH deep discharge trolling batteries from Wal-Mart, plus a huge marine starting battery (like a Group 27). I chose Wal-Mart based on my analysis to the information in the online Deep Cycle Battery FAQ - there are only a few manufacturers, you should buy the freshest batts you can, and buy them by weight. I was right, those house batts were great! The starting batt was way oversized. I'm now convinced you could get by, on a Universal M25, with a motorcycle or garden tractor sized battery. After 5 years of faithful service, and abuse, they gave up. I got two Group 24 Seavolt batts at West Marine, on sale. Same dimensions and rated capacity. They were never, ever as good as the originals, and are inadequate for our needs while cruising of 24 hour refrigeration, DC lights at night, anchor light, and daytime use of autopilot, VHF, sailing instruments and GPS. In addition, we've added more load, including a notebook PC (5 Amps!) and more. I found that two 24's fit in the forward starboard seat locker, where the starting batt was. (The primary house batteries are in teh aft starboard seat locker). Used the existing #4 wires, added some new #4 jumpers, and got two more Wal-Mart 24's, off the palette. So, the two SeaVolts and the two Wal-MArts equal a theoretical 300 AH, in two banks. All of this is fed and managed by a 125A Hamilton-Ferris Powermax alternator, Xantrex 3 stage charging regulator, and 100A 3 channel Pathmaker. So, now, where should I mount the starting battery? I temporarily connected the engine to bank two. I though that the space behind the engine, just port of midships, and just aft of the water-lift muffler would be a good spot; I'd glass-in a plywood floor, make hardwood cleats and clamps fixed with threaded rod. Any issues with that location? Any better ideas? Any recommendations for a smaller-than-24 sized engine battery, like a lawn and garden tractor battery? Thanks, jv

Extra Battery

That is exactly where I located mine. I fit 4 6volt batteries in the aft starboard setee location (originally 2 group 24's). My C36 is a 1993 and the forward setee is just storage.

On Anodyne

On Anodyne the starting battery is in the shelf behind the seatback cushion for the rear starboard seat. Our #1 house bank (2 group 24s) is beneath the same seat. The #2 house bank (two more 24s) is in the aft cockpit locker. The charger is in the space behind the drawers beneath the nav-station. I like the easy access. I’d be concerned that I might not check the battery as often as I should with it behind the water lift. But it does make electrical sense to have it as close to the starter as possible and would free up useful storage.

Interesting

Dennis, I never would have thought of using the space behind the seat back cushion for a battery - clever! I kind of like that space for the parts, etc., that I keep there now. I also wanted to keep the weight of the batts as close to the centerline as possible, but on a boat this size I'm not sure the one batt would make a difference. Has anyone experimented with a smaller starting battery?

525 Amps (5 batteries in the same space of 2)

Before we began our 2 year Caribbean trip I had a battery box built. Buy a sheet of 1/4 Polyproplene and have a welder fabricate it. I found that this new Single Battery Box will Hold 5 batteries in the same area that previously only held 2 batteries in their seperate battery boxes. The great thing is you haven't altered any weight location change in the layout and design of the boat.

Under galley sink and/or aft of engine

Hi JV - On my Catalina 36 I installed three 6v batteries under the aft stbd game seat, another two under the forward game seat, one aft of the engine by the prop shaft (accessed from aft stateroom) and the start battery under the galley sink. Unorthodox, but a lot of power! Best of luck getting all the amps to fit... Trevor
