You are overthinking it. If you have pulley alignment issues, please fix those. Otherwise, just accept the belt wear, carry some spares, they are not expensive. Most of the time you will not be taxing the alternator at full output because the batteries will not accept such a high current for long. Your setup is pretty good, stay with 400 Ahrs, if you need to replace the batteries, replace with four golf carts.

at Mack Boring's Yanmar diesel school there were numerous issues discussed about problems resulting from trying to upsize and change the alternators on the yans. a gold level yan dealer may be able to give you additional info .

Yanmar will gladly sell you an engine with the stock 125A alternator, and then the second alternator kit, which adds another 125A alternator for 250A worth of alternators on one engine.

We have a customer who ordered this exact set up when he re-powered.. Within a few weeks he had totally cooked both of the stock Valeo alternators trying to charge a large LiFePO4 bank. We swapped the cooked alternators out for Balmar alternators with external regulators & temp sensors, then properly set them up, and he has been running this way now for over three years without a single issue.

While there are a lot of bad installers out there, doing poor installations, larger alternators are not difficult to fit and I would love to know the "problems" they've seen?? I buy a lot of stuff direct from MB and have attended numerous training seminars and never once had them discuss larger alternators being problematic. Course now that Yanmar has jumped into the 21st century, and now has serpentine belts, and stock
automotive-grade 125A alternators, maybe they just want to sell you their alternators instead of letting you buy another better-built & better performing alternator? Manufacturers such as Beta will go so far as to custom factory install any alternator you want, even 340A worth! We've even sold Beta a couple of our massive CMI-ED200-ER's.
