Has anyone had any experience using mooring whips on a larger sailboat? My boat moorage has a lot of current which often pushes the boat onto the fenders while at the dock (giving the gelcoat on my Hunter 35.5 more of a workout than I like). I am also on an end tie so cannot use lines on the other side to help the situation. Taylor makes mooring whips for boats up to 20,000 lbs but I have never seen them used on a sailboat.

Archives give some good information.

Type in "mooring whips" and you will find quite a number of posts on this very topic. Gord May in particular gives an excellent explanation re their use on sailboats. Cheers,

I am no expert but.. Unless you have floating docks it could be a problem. I have used the mooring whips here in Florida and even with the relativly small tide cycle we have here it was a concern. just a thought, good luck, Jack

Mooring whip experience

I have used them for 4 years on my O'Day 272LE and they have been excellent. We do not have a floating dock and that was the primary reason I went to them -- with the tidal variation and the necessary slack in lines, it was very difficult to arrange fenders properly. We have a normal tide variation of about 3 feet. We have no current to speak of and are reasonably sheltered, but there are sometimes very healthy winds blowing in towards the dock and the whips handled them well. I generally keep them set so they are fairly taut. I plan to continue using them with my new Beneteau 323, though I will also have fenders set up as a backup. Several other owners at the same inlet use them and all seem satisfied.
