Interesting. What happens if the line goes slack? The stick could fall out and then the line would be loose.

If you don't happen to have a dowel, you can also just do a chain stitch that will release similarly quickly just by pulling on the bitter end. It was standard procedure at the college sailing club, where boats were staying at the dock for a short time. I don't recall any ever drifting off unexpectedly (you can add a locking stitch if you want too).

Great for things like pumping out or refueling, but I'd want something more secure for extended use.

Similar to the chain stitch is the "bank robber hitch"

These are Danish fishing boats on the west coast of Denmark (on the North Sea coast, Jutland, near Thy National Park). They use tractors to pull these boats ashore and drag them back down again. Note the sacrificial slat skids beneath the boats.

There was an interesting small museum there, about the crews that were organized using longboats to rescue stricken vessels along that shore. They operated under incredibly harsh conditions in open boats, using oar power. Original boats and equipment were on display.

Delaware on the Atlanic Ocean is proud of their life saviors, also. Museam near Indian River.
