This is the first year I will be moooring my boat instead of keeping it at a dock I have never used a mooring. I bought on of those 6' Taylor Made mooring pennants to make it easier to pick up the mooring. My question is how is it connected to the mooring. There is an eye at the bottom of the pennant but I am not sure what is best to connect it with or where it go on the mooring. Any help would be apprecitated. Denis

One more part ....

anchor to chain ... to mooring buoy ... generally shackle mooring pennant to chain at mooring buoy ... tie pick up buoy to loop end of pennant with about 5 ft of lighter line. You pick up the pick up buoy, pull the pennant on board and cleat the pennant. and if you are extra conservative you use the line from the pick up buoy to the pennant as a quick safety loop around the cleat over the mooring pennant loop. this is exactly the same method that I use...

It works very well. I also do the safety thing by running the light line around the cleat.

Terminology

One thing you need to know is that the line between the mooring bouy/chain and your boat is the pendant - what you picked up at the store is your pickup bouy. I've attached a link to West's article on moorings, which gives good guidelines. Two tips on pendants - use a rubber shock absorber or create a "snubber" as created by Brian Toss, and use two pendants - it's cheap insurance against one breaking or chaffing through, and two seem to allow the boat to ride better in different currents.

Pick up bouy

Make sure that when you secure the line on the pick up bouy to the mooring pennant that its quite tight. If its loose it'll move and saw through the loop! My preference is to splice the line for the pickup into the splice for the loop in the end of the pennant. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
