Got my copy of my Catalina Island mooring agreement. Just for laughs, I compared the lease for 2001 when I got it with this 2016's lease. The increase was 102%. The US inflation during that same period was 35%. Of course, the mooring service's inflation may be far different than the US average. No wonder I'm feeling a bit squeezed.

Rick,

I think they are just squeezing the boaters for all they can get. The daily rate for non lessees has also gone up substantially in the last few years along with a higher rate for Fourth of July and Cherry coves. This follows the exorbitant increases the yacht clubs got a couple of years ago. As you know many of the clubs had to pull out because of the cost. I wonder what the continual mooring rate increases will do to the general boating public. I haven't worried too much about it in the past but that expensive Rocna and extra chain are starting to look a lot more affordable compared to the moorings.

By the way, did you see there is a proposal to construct rental cabanas in the volley ball court area on the Isthmus Cove side and an extension of bar service to that general area? Next thing you know it will be another Descanso Beach. Not the direction I want to see things going there.

Cheers!

hum this is funny how this goes ..my marina owner stated just yesterday he was going up on the slip rent as he was not doing well at the rates he is charging now ..he is only 33% occupied now ......i told him if he raises my fees he will loose me ...he replied he wasn't going up on mine.....yea right......his name ends with a vowel :yikes:...... this is a bare bones marina with no laundry room nor shower facilities ...the only plus is a slip and power and water that the city provids and he rents the property from the city for percentage and has not spent any money on the marina...... the city does the maintenance...in effect he is the Walmart greater and cashier...so where does the need to raise the rates come into play ...sounds like a copy cat thing to me

My regular summer mooring went up $100 to $2500 this year. Since 2002 it has gone up 106%. My winter storage in the same time has gone up 55%.

Speaking of increases (I do not mean to hijack this thread), my yacht insurance has gone up 20% for last year and again 20% for this year. No claims, no change in coverage. I am not happy.

Fortunately I am in one of the many 501 c 7 non profit sailingsclubs, even more fortunate our club has owned the property and mooring field for many years. Our charter and goal is to keep sailing and owning a sailboat affordable, but costs such as property taxes, insurance, daily running and long term maintenance of the operation go up our costs and dues also rise.
The real world cost of mooring a boat would make an interesting poll (at least in my opinion). Searching for "mooring cost, United States" or mooring cost North America" yields a ton of disparate and out of date data. Reality is that a comparison to years ago is not nearly as useful as comparison to a current nearby or regional yacht club, marina or boatyard cost. A bit more work to account for mooring and/or slip costs for those that offer slips, and membership/ maintenance charges. Perhaps some details with a "total cost of keeping a boat per year" column?
This or a similar thread could give us all a snapshot of where we are for 2016 that might also be useful into the future.
Is there a way to generate a poll in "ask all sailors", then perhaps maybe do the same in some of the other sailing forums to get the broadest picture?

$670/month, $16.75/foot, $8040/year for the 12-month slip (a good price for a well-maintained marina). $2601, $65/foot for the Catalina mooring for a year. $1100 annually for insurance. Of course, these prices will vary wildly depending upon where you are located. I also have to pay county user taxes for the slip, about $150 annually and property taxes on the boat annually of about $1200. Oh, and the rum and wine...

There was an approximate 6% increase between 2014 and 2015 on the cost of mooring a 40' boat at Isthmus Cove, Catalina Island overnight on a summer weekend, the latter date being the last time I moored there. Since moving the yacht to Ventura Harbor two years ago I don't go to Isthmus Cove much now so I don't know the current overnight rate. In comparison with Rick's numbers on slippage in Southern California, VWM is running about $1,300/yr lower for a 40' slip; but still a lot in my opinion.

That expensive Rocna and 200' of half inch chain are indeed priceless to us. Our boat dragging is not something that keeps us up at night. It's the other boats dragging that concerns us.

Yikes. As suspected costs are literally all over the map.
We're at the top of the Chesapeake. Club dues are now $300 and $13 a foot storage which includes mooring and winter on the hard. All members are required to do 35 hours of approved work or pay a fee of $9.00 per hour not worked up to 35 hours ($315) plus a fixed fee of $85.00 for docks. We do have a one time initiation fee of $350.00.
Annual membership is juggled by the number of boats launched versus the number of moorings available. I believe we keep a comfortable margin for guests, attrition, current members and future growth.
Confusing, but in other words our average member pays $800-$1200 per year for storage, mooring, launch, retrieval for a 25-35 foot boat per year.
We're a DIY club, you've got to be comfortable with members driving the launch truck (or learn to drive it yourself), cooking the food, tending the bar, etc.
No white shoes or epaulets here, we have a perverse appreciation of tradition as we recognize them.
At our Burning of the Socks the cannon fired out of order and often. We loved them all the more for that.

102% that sounds about right. The purchasing power of the US Dollar in 2016 is about $0.50 compared to pre-2008. The Government inflation figures include current costs that were fixed prior to the recession. My mortgage expenses have not increased but the cost of a steak at the store has doubled. The cost of fuel has driven the transportation costs and the prices for general goods. The Government is manipulating inflation figures in trying to restore confidence in the economy which is still shaky.
