Hudson River/Nyack

John, I worked hard trying to convince 5 other boats to follow me up to Croton, just north of Nyack for a weekend of swimming and fun. One of the biggest concerns from those less knowledgeable was the river clean. Needless to say, I have a bunch of "upriver" converts. The Hudson is actually an estuary, the water is brackish as the salt water from the ocean flows to somewhere near the Bear Mountain Bridge, and so the water is not drinkable. However it is clean, the beaches from Troy, NY to the George Washington Bridge have been certified as clean and safe by the DEC. However, due the brackish nature of the water, it's not drinkable. Don't be fouled by the darkness of the water, it doesn't mean it’s unsafe. Another thought, there are some great sailing in Haverstraw Bay, little traffic. I make it "upriver" at least two to three times a season. Try Nyack and Haverstraw Bay before discounting it. I'll bet you love it!

City Island is really a small town in the Bronx. You would not know that you are in NYC other than an NYPD car seen occasionally. There are a number of yacht clubs on the Island. I joined Stuyvesant Yacht Club three years ago and have found it to be very satisfactory. The launch is available 24/7 and the yearly dues are about $1,800. In addition, the wind is almost always good and it is about an hour from Dutchess County.
