Here's a thought: Your wife knows your schedule pretty well too, right? What if it's HER your pal's coming to see? I think you people are missing the point: Gift or not, your "friend" should've had the courtesy to ask you for the use of your boat, period. I'd confront him (in a just between us guys kinda way), and point out that you'd have been happy to let him use it if he'd have asked. WTH, if you tell a friend about a great real estate deal, will you take YOUR mistress to his house when he's out?
