Any thoughts on the life expectancy for top chain on moorings.

The previous owner said it was new in spring of 2008. (30 feet of 1/2 inch galvanized.)

We are in a salt water harbor. Our service just changed the top chain for us when we had them put on a new mooring buoy. They said that most top chains only last 2 seasons, maybe 3.

We are still somewhat newbee's so any info on this would be very helpful.

Jack I think that in large part it is a function of the weight of the zinc galvanized coating on the chain.

our mooring chains are micrometered every year--some chain changed out every year--the chain, if not chinese, will last a couple of yrs only, whereas chinese chain should never be used,as the galvanization isnt good and causes cracks and failure without warning or sign if pending fail. that was a huge issue in sin diego in 1999 when a force 50 broke loose from its mooring --broke a link of the chain.
