Montego 19

I'm looking at this boat because it's a swing keel, trailer is in good shape and the current owner has the titles; which is more important in Texas that it should be.

I don't care too much about exact provenience; as I'm really looking for a serviceable day sailer, but my limited research tells me a Montego 19 has a sink and range, ergo.... what is this? Did they make the Montego 19 without these amenities? If not, this doesn't have them so it must be something else.

In short, if it's not a Montego 19 is it made by Big Al's Bait Shop out of paper machier? Is it made from Bald Eagle feathers and children's tears? I can handle a lot of repairs and upkeep, we have the technology, I just want some starting info to make a judgment.

Not familiar with that particular builder, however it sure looks like the line drawings for a Montego 19 over at sailboatdata.com. Keep in mind that those boats were built in the late 70's-early 80's, so there has been plenty of time for previous owners to do their magic

Just because it came from the factory with something doesn't mean it will still be there after 30+ years. My H23 shipped from the factory in 1985 with a sliding galley (sink and stove). It was long gone by the time I purchased the boat. Who knows what happened.. could have been falling apart or stopped working and a PO decided it wasn't worth the effort to fix.. maybe they just got rid of it because it wasn't being used and they wanted more space. Your guess is as good as any! I wouldn't worry about it. You can replace them if you like or find alternatives if needed, such as a portable cook stove and bottled water. Or you can just leave it as is and go sailing :dance:

This looks likea good starting point for a first boat.You can modify and improve as you go.The important thing will be - NO Leaks,The rest can be worked out.Many people on the site will help with ideas and parts where needed. The price is right in my opinion.

I think Mr. Unix is probably right. The lines and layout, what i can tell of the rigging, etc. look like the old line drawings and there has probably been a customization phase.

Also agree with Griff.. I'll be seeing it in person today and if I judge the structure to be sound it will be worth the price. The trailer alone looks worth the price.

Your primary considerartion could be the largest concern, "because it's a swing keel". For a boat 30 years old the condition of a ballasted swing keel becomes a primary concern. Check a couple of things, 1) that the winch and cable operate properly and freely, 2) that there is no excesive side to side play at the keel pivot (no clunk). 3) that there is a locking pin or mechanism to keep the keel in place 4) there are no water leaks at the keel trunk (mostly underway)5) a visual inspection (dive) should not reveal rust in the keel. If the keel checks out and the sails are good try for a package deal for boat and outboard.

I'm a bit late on this thread but I own a montego 19. Practically rebuilt the whole thing and have tested her in rough seas, she did great. I've done two week long trips logging about 180+ nm's each, a handful of 4 day trips
and a lot of local overnight trips. Let me know if you have questions, I found little info on her. Cheers!
