Acugage Tank Monitoring System?? The guessing game on the level in the holding tank is getting old. Any experience with the tank monitoring systems? Thanks, Kerry

Tank Gauge

Since no one else has replied, I will pitch for the All electronic, non mechanical Acu-Gage that I'm using. It's available through the chandlery on this website, where I bought it, as well as other outlets. See the link bellow for more of my experience with it.

I put in the Accu-Gage (I got it right here from

Sailnet). Works great & does its job. I'm satisfied so far and find I use it often (had the holding tank overflow once....now I hope it'll never happen again)..... One quirk (but I'm pretty sure it will be the same for any tank monitoring system ) is that the holding tank on the Cat 36MKII is non linear. That is it only takes a few gallons in the tank to reach 1/4 full and then a few more gallons to reach1/2 full, but you are not near the real 1/2 full of the tank (which I beleive is 8 1/2 gallons out of a total 17 gallons---kind of small in my opinion for a 36 boats that can sleep7!)

Details on the Accu-gauge install?

I'm interested in an installation of an accu-gauge on my 36mkII holding tank. Do you have to remove the tank to get all the access necessary? Where did you mount the control unit? I'm thinking somewhere up above the tank, and then tap into the lighting circuit for power. I'm just mostly unsure about getting access to all areas of the tank.

No I did not remove any tank to put on the monitor

strips for the Accu-Gage system. They are Copper foil strips with sticky stuff on one side. I was able to access the tanks by just removing the pressed wood panels under the Aft bunk or under the salon seat for the holding tank. I was able to *carefully* put the strips down the side of the tanks without removing them. It would have been much easier to put the Strips on if the tanks were removed (But that would have been a big hassle in itself). So I just got a long ling strip of wood (1/4" x 4") and slightly held the copper foil to that peice of wood with just a little tape. Then I pushed the tank away from the wall in its holding spot and slipped the strip of wood with the foil strip down the side and *then* pressed the copper foil on. I didn't even use the special adhesive that came with the Copper foil, the stuff sticks well on its own. I then used the wood strip to rub the copper strips and make sure it was on good and remove any bubbles/wrinkles. On the holding tank in particular I was able to put the strips on the aft portion of the tank near where the hose goes out to the macerator. All this was tricky but do able. As for power I guess you could I connect into the DC light power if its only one tank monitor. ( I think they say you have to get power for tank monitor strips from the actual display) I had the 4 tank monitor system and I had to run wires back to the display. Each tank needs 3 wires. I just used marine telephone wire. I mounted the control unit in the black box behind the slatted teak door to the left of the electrical panel. It fits nice there.

HOLDING TANK GAGE

I MOUNTED A SEALAND TANKWATCH SYSTEM (APPROX. 50 DOLLARS FROM WEST MARINE) ALL THAT IS REQ'D IS TO CUT A HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE TANK TO FIT THE FLOAT, I TOOK POWER FROM THE WATER PUMP WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE SAME AREA. THE GAGE IS MOUNTED IN THE KICK PANEL ON THE STARBORD SIDE CLOSE TO THE HOLDING TANK, ALTHOUGH IT COULD BE MOUNTED ALMOST ANYWHERE. VERY EASY, ABOUT 1 HOUR TO COMPLETE THE JOB.
