What were the model years when the ODay 22 with fixed keel ( Mast 24 ft, draft 1 ft 11 in, No CB, main sail = 76 sq ft) was built, and what were the model years when the "high rig" model ODay 22 with Keel/CB (Mast 28 ft, draft 1 ft 3 in, main sail = 110 sq ft) built? I am looking to buy the fixed keel model in "pristine" condition if I can find one! If not, a late year model Keel/CB!

Hi Anthony, I think the change from shoal draft keel to k/cb took place around 1980, but I can't say for certain. Just curious - why do you prefer the fixed keel model? My 1976 is the fixed keel type, and I'd trade in a minute to get the centerboard model with the big mast and fractional rig. The fixed keel boats are very poor at beating to weather, which is the only reason I'm getting rid of mine. By the way, she's pretty pristine, ya wanna come all the way out to Washington State to pick her up? (kidding!) Clay

Preference for Fixed Keel Model
Clay, Thanks for the information. I like the fixed keel due to the absence of through hulls, and the CB not getting jammed with mud or barnacles when moored in a shallow cove. The fixed keel is also the same draft as the rudder, so the rudder can't get knocked off by obstacles in shallow water, or low tides in a cove! I like the smaller mast for ease of handling during haul out, and fitting under a bridge when going out into the bay. The smaller mainsail (76 sq ft) makes the boat very steady regardless of wind strength (or gusts) and gives a "big boat" feel. I don't race, so upwind performance is not an issue. For casual, comfortable sailing, the boat can't be beat! I have considered the CB/Keel model if I can't find a good late "cruising" model with no core rotin the cabin top or deck! I have also owned an ODay23 (CB/Keel) which is just a litle larger than I want now. I am an experienced sailor, having owned and sailed a lightning (2), Blue Jay, 30 ft Gaff Rigged Ketch (Tahiti), ODay 22 and ODay23. It is time to "down size" a bit!! Tony Ganz

Clay is right, Anthony. The keel centerboard model 22 will give you better performance going to weather. I don't think that you'll have to worry about the centerboard getting stuck, unless you fail to bottom coat the board and keel slot, or if you moor in shallow waters with the keel grounding out. I like the style of the O'Day 22 myself. I think that they have built-in foam flotation too, but if you're not too concerned with weather sailing performance, the fixed keel is OK. They made a lot more O'Day 22s than the 222s, so you're not going to have a problem finding one at a good price. They only built about 300 of the 222s in Fall River Ma. I bought mine new in 1986 and I love it, but they had their bugs. For example, the rudder blades had a habit of breaking. I've bought two of them, so far. My latest blade was built by Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine in Assonet Ma., and it's still kicking. The 222 chain plates weren't all that great either. So, take your time and look them over good.
