Hello. I am new on this site and here goes my question.I have just bought what I believe to be an O'Day 17 with trailer. There are so many styles and models of day sailers I am at a loss as to the year and model of my new boat. There is an emblem that has a W,V and small "c" on each side of the cabin. Can anyone shed some light as to the year and model, if infact it IS an O'Day. Thanks for showing some interest. Barry

Year and model
Barry, Check out the hull numbers on the upper right hand corner of the outside transom. The last two numbers should be the year. Each number and letter signifies something that has to do with the month it was built and the number of hulls produced in that year. For example; the letter "D" could stand for April, and 357 could stand for;-- your boat being the 357 hull built in that year of 1978, if the last two digits were 78 in your number. As for the model, you'd have to check out what year it was made and go on the "I Love O'Days" web site and find out the models of the O'Day Day sailer that were made that year. I'll give you the link to this site and you can search out what your hull number signifies and possibly find the info that you're after. Joe

A view of cockpit floor/ center board area, transom and rudder and logo on side that you described. There are some experts here (not me) that will know for sure. At this point, I think it is similar to, but not an actual O'Day Daysailor. I could be wrong but your boat seems like it has more free board, more spring in the sheer (curved hull to deck joint), and a bow that is a little less plumb than an O'Day. But it looks nice and complete- have fun!

All boats manufactured or imported on or after November 1, 1972 must bear a HIN. Therefore a boat made before may or may not have an I.D. #. Also, state titles are supposed to have HIN on them. So did you get a title? Also, boats made after 1984 have the HIN is another secret location determined by manufacturer for verifing HIN's by law enforcement. I have no clue as to were the 2nd place is on O'Days. Ed K O'Day 26

O'Day or not?
I really can't tell Barry, if it is an O'Day or not. Usually the O'Day Day sailers will have an O'Day logo on each side of the cuddy plus the hull number on the transom which is embossed into the Gel-coat like a stamp. Perhaps more pictures would help someone to recognize it as an O'Day Day Sailer. I'm not exactly an authority on day sailers. I've owned an older O'Day Javelin which is a lot different than the newer models of that boat. Sorry about that. Good luck with your inquiry. Joe

I was just looking around on the net
and it seems Cape Cod Ship Builders has made some reproduction "daysailors". They are located in Wareham Ma. Their name and location may have something to do with your logo. I would guess it's Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard. I.D. numbers should be on inner hull under tiller.

17 oday daysailor
All that has been said is good input and I learn from reading other posts. My first boat was a 1968 Oday daysailor ,your boat looks similar but the bow seems to have more of a rise to it than the Oday. At least as the picture represents here on this site. Whatever it is get out there and sail it ,You'll enjoy the boat that way.

Well, we now know that the boat is a McVay Design, but I'm still curious as to what McVay called this design. She is definitely not a FALCON, despite the fact that the Victoria/McVay web site put the pictures in the section about the Falcon. The Falcon was smaller and had less freeboard than this boat, also a longer foredeck. The Falcon (built at various times by McVay, Beetle Boats/American Boatbuilding, and finally Paceship) was actually a near sistership to the O'Day Osprey (my theory is that the prototype for the Osprey was in fact a Falcon, O'Days were being built by Marscot Plastics in the late 1950's and Marscot and Beetle merged to form American Boatbuilding) The Osprey had a slightly smaller cuddy and the cockpit was slightly different from the Falcon.
