I had a ski accident LAST January (2009!) and the titanium plate they installed broke in August 2009, requiring a second surgery, left femur. As a result, my muscles have atrophied pretty much. I'm up walking (hobbling but getting lest obvious!) again, but the quad is pretty shot, requiring lots of exercise. Ankles and feet forgot how to work, too. Unfortunately, it's winter here, so I can't use our pool. The whole timing thing was pretty rotten.
From what you've said, if they get you up and moving right after the surgery, you should be fine, 'cuz bones don't hurt, it's the muscles that need the work. I'm still tryin' to get my muscles to remember what they've been doing so well for the past 64 years. Sheez, give muscles a year off and they think they've got a permanent vacation.
Each airport is different. Some don't beep on belt buckles, some will get ya for having fillings in your teeth. One of my local airports is no hassle, the other is a strip search. Go figure. Calibration is not TSA's strong suit.
Oh, yeah, sailing! Both my PT and my doctor said sailing is the BEST thing to do, since it works the muscles properly for balance and strengthening. Who am I to argue? I got back on the boat, both times, as quickly as I could. In June and July I planned a series of outings, each going from crew and motoring only all the way to solo anchoring. Worked great. This time work and winter have gotten in the way, but with the weather clearing I'll be back to my normal at least once a week outings. The PT also said it's good for my mental health, like there's anything left of that after these two surgeries...not much to start off with either...
