I know there are thousands of post regarding MOB equipment, but let me add another. I had a frend join me for my recent trip back from Ensenada, Mexico. We were talking of spouses, friends and boat guests and what they would do if the skipper (or someone else) were to go overboard. Not much chance in cold sloppy California coastal waters. Both of us agreed it would take a lot of time and trial and error to get to us even close. I carry a strobe, horseshoe and pole, all tied together, per PHRF and other requirements. The chance of my wife or crew deploying that in a real situation in the event of an MOB is way low to be useful. I always instruct them to toss the throwable cushions first and the rest later.
He told me about a throwable MOB that will work as a floatation assist in addition to a marker and strobe that he had seen at a show. It can be tossed like a cushion immediately. Supposedly, it is SOLAS approved, but I'm keeping my other gear anyway for races. So this is one of those things you hope you never have to use but feel better for having it available.
Anyhow, both he and I purchased one. It arrived today and looks like a good piece of marine equipment. A tad heavy, but it certainly is tossable immediately which was my requirement. Here's a description: http://danbuoy.com/
