In the Florida Keys this month I heard at least 2 Pan Pan announcements from USCG that were distress calls activated by DSC radios. They gave the MMSI number and no other info. Apparently the DSC radios were not hooked up to GPS.

Curious as to why no boat info was given since one has to enter it to get an MMSI #. Does anyone know? Maybe there is a USCG person on the site that can explain it. I'd figure that USCG has access to the MMSI database.

It would seem to me easier to be on the lookout if one knew the vessel type, length etc.

That's true for US boats with MMSIs given thru BoatUS. Given where you are, possibly a non-US registered vessel. Maybe the GC cannot access all these databases?
