Hello folks,

So, we have an '83 MK I. Has anyone replaced the fixed side hatch in the head with an opening hatch?

Thanks,

Mine came with a slider and I put in a fixed tinted port. Slider would leak. I would remove the old and measure the opening and order a real port. Should be pretty easy. Now you have me thinking, a breeze in there would be nice.

Yeah, that was plan B. The lazy in me was hoping someone had already done this and I could order the hatch ahead of time.

Chris,

I added opening ports in the head & over the hanging locker & this helped alot for cross ventilation. I removed my door & added the motel style type thick shower curtain. With the opening port & shower curtain people especially women, don't get as queasy while under sail or feel as claustrophobic. I gave my door away free to a fellow sailor.

The biggest 2 mistakes Frank Butler made were, two-part portal frames that were non-opening ports. Here in the Florida heat, it can be a cooker down below.

Every older Catalina owner has complaints about leaks/opening ports at one time or another. Check past threads on SBO Catalina port questions. My friend's 1984 Newport 30 has the same ports & deals with leaks also.

I'm dealing with 3 leaking ports now. This will be the third re-bed. But this time, I will try butyl tape instead of caulk.
