Mixing metals?

Should i have any concerns using a piece of aluminum angle to mount a Perko (bronze) sea strainer?

I have a bronze groco 750 strainer. The original basket inside was stainless. Where the water contacted both metals inside the strainer the bronze was eaten away right up to the edge of the O-ring where the water contact stops. On the outside there were no problems. I think the only time you will see a problem is when there is water continually contacting both surfaces.

Why not use a couple of nylon washers to seperate the two elements?

Perhaps. Also, use polyethylene tubing over the fastners.

This is common practice in the chemical industry.

But try to match metals.

I couldn't use the aluminum angle, it wasn't long enough to mount the strainer. I used a 5/8 x 4" piece of mahogany and some 3/8 thick lexan. I had to move the Racor filter over to fit the strainer where I could remove the top for cleaning. It's mounted to the wall inside the engine compartment. It worked well and looks neat. Almost professional.

My second season with my first boat. Although all the updates I've been doing have been successful. I don't think I ever want to do it again! Skinned knuckles, broken bolts and broken backs. Is it worth it?
