Mixing Elbow

I bought a 79 Hunter 30. Been slowing working my way thru the boat. Boat sails great, it's just a problem getting there. Engine will not run over about 1/2 throttle without heating up excessively. I have traced problem to mixing elbow(or beyond). I have great water flow to the elbow, but there it seems to stop. So far I have done most of the work myself. I need help with a good source for parts such as the mixing elbow. Thanks.

Hi, I replaced mine a couple of years ago on my H33. Try Torressen Marine (sp?), but be prepared! These things aren't cheap, and it can be a real knuckle buster changing it. Check out the archives too, there have been several articles about mixing elbow woes. Good luck!!

Local source

Hello Butch: I to do all my own boat work. I have found the local yellow pages to work for me. I'm in a farely small town (Cape Coral, Ft Myers) and have had no trouble so far. I recently did the elbow on my 2GM20. I found it easiest to remove the manifold with elbow attached. Be aware that the elbow side of the nipple is reverse threaded. Good luck red

Easy

I have a 1980 Hunter 30 with a 2QM15. My mixing elbow went bad about three years ago and I changed it. It was easy to do and most of the work can be done by reaching over the front of the engine. Be sure you replace all of the gaskets at the same time. You should check the condition of the rubber exhaust hoses and muffler as well. I replaced everything. While the elbow was off, it was easy to rinse the dirt, mud and crud which had accumulated in the water jacket of the exhaust manifold. Around the northeast, parts are available from Mack Boring of Union , NJ - 908-964-0700. The elbow was about $110.

$150...

And often available at ship's store because so many of them jam up. Good advice to go the HOW Archives, where one fellow posted pictures this summer of how to change out the elbow.

Not familiar with the YSM/YSB engine.

Butch: I am not familiar with the elbow on your engine. On the 2GM engines there are 4 bolts on the block. So removing the entire elbow and manifold is the way to go. I doubt that you could ever remove the elbow any other way because of the rust and corrosion. Just to elaborate on John's point, sometimes the exhaust hose will break down and get bubbles or blockages internally. If you find when you remove the elbow that it is NOT the problem, you may need to remove the exhaust too and inspect it too. Be sure that you have some "NEVER SEIZE" to put on the bolts and the connection between the elbow and the manifold. These parts get rusty and are extremely difficult to remove without it. It really does help to have a little gasket glue/adheasive to hold exhaust manifold gasket in place when you are trying to re-attach it.

MAY NOT HAVE TO REPLACE

Butch: I've had (I'm now using the past tense since TIDE just sold) an 85 Hunter 31 since new. Replaced/cleaned the mixing elbow 4 times in that period. As Steve and others have said, getting the elbow off (at least the 2GM) is a potential knuckle buster but doable. However, you may not have to replace the elbow, just clean it. That is what I did the last 3 times (last about 3 years ago). I used a 50/50 mix of Muriatic acid in a bucket and simply put the elbow in it. I also "dunked" the small H2O fitting that leads from the heat exchanger (again this applies to the 2GMF w/ fresh-salt water exhange system)to clean it out also. After a few minutes w/ lots of bubbling, I removed both pieces and rinsed them well in fresh water. After they dried, I (mostly for asthetic reasons) applied Yanmar silver engine paint to the exteriors and put the whole thing back together. For whatever its worth, I put this not fun task on a periodic maintenance schedule for TIDE and removed/cleaned the mixing elbow every 3 years. Since I started this, I've not had any trouble with overheating at any rpm. You can be sure I'll be doing the same with my new boat (Yanmar equipped...just a couple extra cylinders!). Smooth sailing!
