Mixing elbow

I have a simple question for you motor heads. I tore apart my heat exchanger today to check it and clean it. It seemed pretty clear. It's on a 2004 3GM30F. What confused me was looking for the mixing elbow. Is there one on this engine, and what exactly it is mixing?,

Yes, there should be one attached to the exhaust manifold. It is mixing sea water with the exhaust. At to why the manual says:

The high temperature, high pressure exhaust gas intermittently emitted from the cylinders at the speed of sound enters the exhaust manifold where it is muffled by expansion and cooling water. It is then mixed with the cooling water at the mixing elbow to lower its temperature and muffle it further, and it is discharged.
A water-cooled exhaust manifold is employed for a high muffling effect

Ed, Yes your engine will have a elbow.The letter "R" is the mixing elbow. There are two types and my guess is your's is more like a u shaped pipe. It will be located in the same place as in the picture. 4 bolts and a gasket will disconnect it from the heat exchanger. (picture courtesy of yanmar help .com). It will have a water hose inlet to bring water into the exhaust for cooling, it can be view in the picture just after the heat exchanger, far rigth side on picture, kind of hanging off back of engine.

Thanks for the info, I was looking for something way too complicated. It is right there as shown, and I had taken the hose off for access to the heat exchanger.

I'm happy to have access go this forum again but less happy to have to return to port for repairs... So it goes...

I just took a quick look at the first chapter of your essay. Looks like you've put in a lot of work there. When I finish up my coffee I need to get into the engine room so I don't think I can give it the reading that it obviously deserves. Hope to get to it later...
