I will be changing the mixing elbow on my 2GM20f Yanmar. Should I replace the exhaust elbow and the nipple between them as well?

Frank: I depends on how bad your coupling is. The entire assembly is sometimes nearly impossible to seperate. My experience says you need to large pipe wrenches with breaker bars and a torch. The treads on the coupling are left hand thread on one side and right hand on the other. If you look in the photo forum you can find my article on doing the job. You may want to purchase the entire assembly and return what you do not need. Be sure that you get a gasket for the manifold, some never-sieze to coat all the threads on the coupling and the bolts for the manifold. Also a little gasket spray makes it much easier to re-attach the entire assembly. Also getting the hose off the elbow can be a major part of the task.

Frank, I replaced mine last summer. I removed the elbow and brought to a shop in Port Townsend, Shoreline Marine Diesel 360-379-8344, they removed the nipple and connected it to a new elbow. The elbow was about $ 180. I replaced the hose as well. The nipple is SS and pretty tough. They has a of the other part you might need. Phil Phil

Hey Frank, opinions vary on this but -
I replaced them all with black pipe fittings from Home Depot and will never go back to Yanmar for this part again. Mine is still good after two seasons. Check the archives for specifics. If you replace yours, twist the flange after you remove the four bolts and you will be able to reuse the gasket. I put antisieze on my gasket to keep it good during any future removal.

Check the elbow's inside
My engine was overheating and the mechanic had a good idea why. He said those elbows often occlude completely preventing the exhaust water from exiting with enough volume. I could seem small amounts of steam coming out the exhaust by the stern When he pulled it, there was only a pin hole left open in the middle. If you haven't ever replaced it, or know that it has, it's a "must check" item. You need to pull it to check it, but it's worth it.

Frank. I did mine in January this year. I had to wreck the old niple to get it out of the manifold to reuse it, but I got it out. I just collapsed it with repeated hitting with a blunt punch. Try it first, then if you can't budge it, go and buy a new elbow. Don't skimp on gaskets and such. Do it right and walk away from it. Don't even think about reusing the elbow. Scrap it and move on. Neil

I have a YSB12 and have the same engine problems. Steam, low water flow, runs away on sump oil and exhaust. I removed the exhaust hose with a 1/2" chisel and hammer. I tapped the chisel down between the hose and pipe until I could strong arm the hose loose on the pipe. Only then was I able to remove it. NOW How do I remove the 3 13mm bolts holding the ehaust flange and elbow. Heat? Impact driver?

In the end trhe exhaust elbow and stainless nipple were ok. They came apart easily with the two 3foot pipe wrenches I borrowed. I ended up replacing the Mixing elbow and exhaust hose as it had blistered. Thanks again for all the free advice. Frank S/V Refugee
