Can anyone tell me if they have closed off all access to the Mississippi Coast Islands because of the government shutdown. I have a friend headed from Mandeville, LA to Pirates Cove, AL this week and he was planning to stop by Ship Island tonight. I suppose he can anchor near the island but was wondering if they would be able to go ashore.

Hey, T. I just called 'em and the recording says that the seashore is closed.. I would not hesitate to go ashore on Horn or Petit Bois but make sure that the boat papers are all in order.. There was only one ranger on Horn and none on Petit Bois. Ship had a bunch of ranger presence, so if he doesn't want to be hassled, it is probably not a good place to land.

A little explanation

My comment is based on the unfortunate fact I live close to DC. It apparently was not covered much in the national media (what a surprise) that the same day they were trying to turn veterans away from the WWII Memorial they were holding a rally for 100,000 illegal aliens on the other side of the mall. Nancy Pelosi was kind enough to give a speech thanking the regime for coming up with the money to hold the event.

The government shutdown has ended now, as you all know. So I guess they can go back to their normal staffing levels, i.e. send the extra Rangers back home from being on overtime pay and pulling double duty to harass people away from the islands-- because of lack of funding! And now with less staff and less expense than while on "partial shutdown", welcome everyone back to the islands again.

Grrr! Bureaucrat logic at its best.

I shall now climb down off of my soapbox and continue on with life.

Rufus- don't trip over a dog:)

Pirates Cove is one of my favorite stops. Was there two days when I came back through in Nov, 2011.
