Repost from the Ask a Hunter Owner Forum: Help, lost my engine zinc assembly overboard! Any suggestions as to where a replacement can be found? The part in question is the oval-shaped cast iron piece which bolts onto the side of the engine with two bolts at each end. (The zinc's bolt goes through a hole in the middle of the piece and is held by a nut and washer from the outside). I this is not a replaceable part, can a new piece be machined from stainless stock using the paper gasket as a guide? (The problem with this approach might be that the bolt-hole cutouts in the gasket are slightly oversized and the bolt holes in the cap should line up exactly with the bolt holes on the engine block). I now have a gaping hole in my engine, so any suggestions as to sources will be greatly appreciated... Thanks.

I've got a suggestion

Torrensen is a great resource I've used them many times. If you can't get the part from them you should try to find out if anyone has a junk motor that you can get the part from. If not I think I can help (if we have the same motor). When I change my zinc (I do it in the yard at the end of each season) I'll take the plate that holds the engine zinc off. After I clean it up I can photocopy the plate. This will give you a template to make up a new cover. i would use some stainless or cast iron stock to make up a blank. Then use a grinder to get the correct shape. You then use rubber cement to glue the paper template to the new part. With a drill press you can make the holes in the correct places. I'd suggest that you use double or thick gaskets. I don't buy the gasket any more. I make one out of rosin paper (that pink stuff they put over new floors). I cut out the right shape and then use 3 or 4 coats of permatex to cover the paper. You can also use a brown paper gorcery bag. I've done this for the past 10 years without a problem. It assures a good seal on the plate that holds the zinc. It's not that I'm cheap, rather it hard to get to the Yanmar dealer for the parts. If you think I can help email me at hnelson@downstate.com

Part numbers for zinc assembly

I purchased the SB8/SB12 parts catalog from Torreson. It's a really great reference for the engine -- in conjunction with the service manual, it's almost easy to figure the thing out! I don't know how much you lost overboard, so here are all the associated part numbers: 1. Packing (seals between zinc

The unavailable "flange" is the missing part...

Thanks all. Tried Torresen first of course... If anyone knows of another good Yanmar parts (or junk engine) source, please feel free to suggest... Thanks for the photocopy idea, I'll email you individually.

Try this shot in the dark...

It's a shot in the dark, but I know of two marinas that stock a lot of different Yanmar Parts. Try these: Brewer's Mystic (CT) 1-860-536-2293. Ask for Paul (no relation) the mechanic. He did work on my boat and had a big shop. Kingman Marine in Pocasset, MA. (508) 563-7136 Was there this summer and was impressed with their supplies. Or try calling some large Marinas. Also try Mack Boring in Bridgewater, MA. www.mackboring.com Good luck.

YANMAR.COM

Replaced the zinc this summer. My local Yanmar distributor is fabulous. Gave me pics and everything I possibly need for my engine (Yanmar 1gm) If it is a Yanmar, the Yanmar site will give you your local distrubutor, then just give them a call. A good parts guy is worth his/her weight in gold.
