Just got a "new" 2002 X with a Honda BF50. I'm just wondering about what mileage to expect so I know how much fuel capacity to figure on.

Some owners of your engine and boat have reported that loaded for cruising, and experiencing seas and currents on a long trip at various speeds from idle to WOT they got from 2 mpg to 5 mpg. The recommendation was to figure 4 mpg to be safe, if can maintain a moderate cruising speed of half to three quarters throttle. HOpe this helps.

Gallons per hour
Boat mileage is usually determined by how many gallons are cinsumed per hour rather than miles per gallon due to the variances in distance depending on surface conditions, currents, etc. A Honda dealer should be able to help you get a ball park estimate if you give them info on your boat, ie. weight cruising rpm's etc. Good luck!

i think most use MPG because for the most part Mac owners don't power hundred's of miles at a time. usually it's a regular 10-20 mile jaunt that they've done more than once so they measure the fuel usage to go a particular distance. i, too, get 4-5 MPG with my '04 tohatsu 90 tldi. got about the same with a an '02 suzuki 50.

Suzuki 50 Problems
I completely disagree with Up Yours regarding the Suzuki 50. I had several problems with my Suzuki 50. It wasn't near enough power for my needs and ran extremely hot on long runs at wide open throttle. In fact one time the heat limiter came on and shut the motor completely down. The Suzuki technician never did diagnose the problem other than saying it's too little motor for too big a boat so run it at lower speeds. At first we discussed upgrading to a Suzuki 70 which weighs over 340 pounds. But the weight to horsepower ratio is way out of line. I was finally sold on upgrading to an Evinrude ETEC 90. I am very happy with it. Clean burning, lightweight (310 pounds), as quiet as the Suzuki, and (going with the title of this thread) very fuel efficient. In my opinion, the heavy and low torque Suzuki 50 is not enough power for a heavy Macgregor 26M. Now that I know better I'm trying to figure out why one would insist on pushing a 3,500 pound boat with a little 50 hp motor. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

suzuki makes a fine product. i had a 50hp, but it seemed sluggish to me. quiet, yes, but sure didn't feel like the 50hp 2 stroke johnson i owned in the early 90's. that 2 stroke went like a bat-outta-hell. head to head power, the suzuki 4 stroke 50 could not get close to other Macs in the club that had the tohatsu "2-smoke" 50. so, anyway, i moved to a 90hp tohatsu tldi which is what many Mac owners are now re-powering with. i really like the tohatsu reliability. it seems to get the same mpg as 4 strokes or that new etec from evinrude.
