I have tried every recommended concoction and also store items to rid the black mildew on my non skid areas. The liquids do seem to reduce the mildew to a stain effect, however getting the blck out of the perforated non skid skin has become almost impossible. Stainless steel brushes etc etc..do not remove the mildew.. Is there a work all type of recommendation out there..The non skid is poured with the hull and is still in excellent condition...I do not want to lose the non skid, nor paint over it and render the non skid non-effective...Thank you for any and all heads up....

Mildew on Non Skid...

Thanks for the input about pressure washer..In fact I purchased one just for that purpose...The pressure is great, it cleans the rest of the boat with ease, but does not dent the black mildew that seems to be determined to stay adhered to the non skid areas in splotches..i am hoping that someone has a "withces" brew out there that will "eliminate with predjudice' this mildew. From all indications it is not spreading but the removal from the non skid seems imposssible.

Like Tim said, Soft scrub works well

Using a soft brush with soft scrub seems to work really well for the mildew on my non-skid. Be careful with a pressure washer, adjust it so it does not have so much pressure do damage anything. Rich, what's up with you and your pressure washer? *pop ;D Manny

Tub & Tile cleaner

I use any brand of tub and tile cleaner spray found at your local grocery store. I believe it is the bleach in the solution that does the trick. spray on mold or mildew and let it set for a few minutes, then wipe off with wet rag or hose down with water.

I used the stuff ...

they sell specifically for non-skid decks, worked great and mine had not been touched in at least 10 years! I had to do it twice. I put it on, waited I think they said for two minutes, scrubed it with a STIFF brush...and was amazed at how well it worked! I'll go out to the boat later and tell you the exact name. I am pretty sure I got it in the boating section of WalMart. Jack

Secret brew

Water TSP and bleach in a spray bottle. Use on a small area at a time let sit about 5 minutes and brush. Rinse well the stuff is caustic. Workes very well on rubrail made of rubber (vinyl?) Wear goggles if windy. Seems to kill the spores and retard regrowth.

I use softscrub with bleach and mildly abraisive pad

I use softscrub with bleach to clean my entire boat. The bleach will get the mildew. I then use Woodywax on the non-skid and entire deck. The Woodywax keeps a wax surface that is not slippery and allows the dirt and grime to be easily washed off.

Better Than Sex????????????Help

You need a lot of help with your pressure washer, any good cleaner with srcub brush will help if not you are letting it go too long before cleaning don't try and take his power washer Nick

Sounds like...

it must be something other than mildew. My non-skid is painted... the pressure washer will get anything out of it... as long as it hasn't stained the paint. I use the middle head of 5 and run it a couple of inches off the deck. If the surface wasn't painted... I would not attempt at such a close range or pressure. last thing you want to do is to force water into the Gel-coat. How about "Roll-Off"?

Are you sure

it is mold and not the fiberglass becoming visible through the gelcoat?

Where are you located?

If you're located on the east coast and the mildew is black (specks ... a lot of them) then its probably not mildew but 'artillery fungus', a fungus that lives on tree bark and THRIVES in damp moist conditions. Only thing that will remove artillery fungus is CAUSTICS ... any detergent that has high pH: TSP - trisodiumPhosphate, sodium silicate based, Lye soap, etc. ... the caustic will DISSOLVE the fungal cells. Dont get caustics anywhere near bare teak ... will strip the tannins out of bare teak. To prevent mildew and other fungals from penetrating their filiments INTO gelcoat and nonskid is to seal the pores of the gel with a non-skid "deck wax" such as Woody Wax, etc. But you have to strip the old dead deck wax (with mild caustic) once yearly or the fungus will use the old dead/oxidized wax as a nutrient source. !*
