Lake Minnetonka's own. America's first and best Around-the-world skipper. Lost on the way to the start of the Vendee. Crazy date, but if you can make it (Pia and I will be there), I'll buy you a beer.

Nice pic Gunni! OK throw-back pictures... Here is a current Minneapolis-based SBO poster helping Mike out at the Annapolis Boat show before his fated departure.

Sorry for your loss Jackdaw. Sure would be nice to see Mike Plant in the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Every competitive sailor should know him.

The three grandkids I am raising have all been beneficiaries of the Mike Plant Memorial Scholarship fund for sailing lessons at the Wayzata Community Sailing Center.

I'll be there if I can find a babysitter.

Kestrel219, CB32863 and I attend this lovely event last night, along with maybe 10 others from WYC. Maybe some of the other SBO folk too, but I didn't see anyone suspicious. There was a big crowd, totally SRO at the Excelsior Brewing Company tap room. Maybe the beer factored. Anyway it was great to hear Patrica recount stories. I was reminded that a group was trying to make a movie about Mike's life. They have a trailer up on Vimeo. In it is a wonderful recording of a spontaneous eulogy a friend of Mikes made at his funeral. It's reprinted on a large plaque at WYC.

Who needs someone that races around the world in sailboats? Inspiring us to believe we can achieve the impossible?

Who needs it?

Who needs someone who never settles for good enough? Who's expectations of himself elevate those expectations we have of ourselves?

Who needs it?

Who needs someone who is more interested in living, than in longevity?

Who needs a searcher, who reminds us of how little we have found?

I do.

Nice crowd, good beer.
Good on you, Henry, wish we'd have known you were there. We were standing at the table behind the seating area, on the way to the beer taps.

I was the short fat guy standing with my wife right behind Mike Plant's mother, midway back from the left side of the stage. My wife sat down next to her near the end of the program. I was wearing a tan baseball cap with a sailboat logo and a blue Good Old Boat sweatshirt.
