"Severely injured and permanently handicapped by a hang gliding accident when he was younger, Mike Harker got into sailing only when he was 52. Eight years later at the age of 60 he completed a mostly solo circumnavigation in his Hunter 49, Wanderlust 3, a make of boat said by some to be not suitable for serious blue water work." Gary Wyngarden's interview with Mike is now online at http://www.hunterowners.com/ref/harker_interview.htm In the interview Mike expresses some opinions that run 180 degrees from Conventional Wisdom about offshore sailing. What do you think about Mike's perspectives, his accomplishments, and his experience?

Great Story

You should post a link in the other sites. This is a good story regardless of the kind of boat you own. Did Mike mention losing his house in the last fire we had in the Lake Arrowhead (SoCal) area? I wonder if he's thinking of rebuilding or if it's become redundant based upon his cruising plans? He's really an inspiration. So often, folks stay at the dock being intimidated with all the prep and equipment that they read long distance cruisers should have. He just went and learned along the way. There would be a lot more of us out there if we followed his example. Especially if we got a look at his sometimes 'pick up crew' ;) Nice job, Gary! Rick D.
