Cal 2-27 Survey
Hello Dave,First of all, a "professional" survey is probably justified. In my case, I bought Magic without assistance. I knew what I was getting into, as she was a fixer upper. After six months of work, I had her seaworthy. As for my Cal 2-27, I recommend that you take a good look at the rudder post to see just how much play there is in it. Also, from what I gather, Cal's are known to develop leaks where the hull and deck meet. I suppose it just depends on how hard the boat has been sailed/raced over the years. Beyond that, standing and running rigging should be inspected. Down below, check the thru-hulls and valves. Note that Cals were originally build with gate valves. Of course, if you can get it out of the water to inspect the hull, then take a close look to see if the hull has developed blisters, as that can be a significant expense to correct/repair.The 2-27 is a great sailing boat. It's just about the right size for my wife and me. We cruise/race it year round.Regards,Michael Duvalls/v Magic, 1979 Cal 2-27Pompano Beach, FL
