Due to the shrinking economy we have been told that there will be many job losses in our department. For what I do the opportunities in NY, NY are greater. Thus we will be looking to move to the metro NY area on the NJ side. Having little luck in finding a new marina in either NJ or NY (Not Long Island) any ideas? We have a Hunter 290.

Why not keep the boat in CT?
NJ to CT isn't a bad run by car in non rush hours. You might also think about public transportation to get to the boat from NJ on summer weekends when the traffic seems unbearable. If you pick a town West of New Haven where the Metro North train station is walking distance from marinas, you can leave right from Grand Central. Going from NJ to NYC isn't difficult with public transit. You're probably talking 2- 2 1/2 hours NJ to CT which is less than a rush hour car ride. Keeping the boat in either Norwalk or Milford would be doable. I'd keep it in Norwalk because BoatUS is right there along with other marine stores within walking distance from the South Norwalk train station. There are also commuter trains leaving from Grand Central where South Norwalk is the first stop. Welcome to the land of hefty public transportation commutes. Some people like them, some don't. Costs are significantly higher in the Metro NY area. Keep that in mind when evaluating job offers.

Eric, Move to Florida......
Get out of the frozen rat race. Come to sunny Florida. I have an empty boat slip next to me. The dock has the most beautiful venue over looking the old town in St. Augustine. It is 75 degress today. We are planning a week end sail to Daytona. Come on down............... Ted

Eric, if you do take a job in the city just commute like thousands do on Amtrak, while not the most enjoyable it would be an alternative to a move. However if you do move check out the Jersey shore around Cape May area or depending on where you move (north jersey)maybe on the Hudson River.South Jersey is a boating communtiy with several boat mfg in the area and lots of boating oppertunties. City Island (just north of the city in the Bronx)is a boating community and worth looing at. Good Luck on what ever you decide !

There are marinas just north of the Tappen Zee Bridge on the West side in Nyack and also in Haverstraw. South of there is a little pricey in the Jersey City area across from manhattan. There are reasonable priced marinas and yacht clubs in the raritan bay and on the south shore of Staten Island. R. Young

Take a look at NOAA chart # 12324 for the details of where to sail and keep your boat. There are hosts of weekend live-aboards that commute from north Jersey to the Barnegat Bay area.

You might try Liberty State Marina in NJ. Great view of the Manhattan skyline. There even is a shuttle from the Marina to Manhattan.
