How are the tides and currents in the straits between islands ?
Tides in the islands are pretty minimal, only about a foot or two. The real issue is trade winds funneling between the islands. Two channels are particularly troublesome, the Molokai channel between Oahu and Molokai and the Alenuihaha between Maui and the Big Island.

The channels run more or less NE to SW and the mountains on the islands funnel the wind into the channel. The Alenuihaha is particularly wild as the trades are funneled between 10,000 ft Haleakala on Maui and 13,740 ft Mauna Kea on the Big Island. These 2 channels are fairly narrow, on a good day you can see Molokai from Oahu. The channel between Oahu and Kauai is pretty wide at 65 miles so the winds are less fo an issue once you get away from the islands.
