Has anyone installed a cleat midships on a Hunter 31 83-87?
Did you attach it to the toe rail?
What size cleat did you use?
If so did you use the rub rail bolt holes or just drill and counter sink new ones? If you have pictures that would be great!
Thanks again
Don

Yes, I have. Purchased a steel angle brace at Home Depot. Cut it to size with a hecsaw, rounded of the edges at a benche grinder and drilled holes on top for the cleat and on the sides to fit the toe rail openings. Got some allen bolts, nuts and washers to affix to the toe rail. The metal was polished, primed and painted black to protect it. It was set in between the shrouds to save the owners toes. I used a West Marine Nylon 8" cleat. The purpose was to be able to set spring lines. The project including the angle brace, hardaware and the cleat came to around $25. I think it turned out better than the one being sold at West Marine for $80. Sorry about not having picture but it was for a friend's boat who has since upgraded.

Cleats

Hi Don, check out the Boat Info tab above, then Hunter Owner Modifications, model 42 and mid ship cleat project. That was five years ago and it made a huge difference in solo docking. Did all the work myself with tools on hand. I purchased the cleats from Hunter to match the original bow and stern cleats. I used my tiger saw to cut the vertical section from the toe rail and ground it smooth. I'm very pleased with the results. The project notes cover most of what was involved.

Don: I suggest that you look at the options that SBO Dave gave you. I really do not think that you want to drill holes in the deck and worry about stubing your toes and taking a chance of water intrusion.

My sailing club does alot of rafting, so adding the mid-ships cleats to my B323 have been a major blessing. I put it where a left-right-left step will get you around shrouds, jib cars, cleat. Stubbing toes not a problem if you place it right.

I used a couple of Forespar folding cleats attached to the toerail on my Beneteau 323. They are not in the way and when folded over they are not a trip hazard.

Since I side tie to my seawall, I used two on the same side of the boat, one forward of the shrouds and one aft. This allows me to get good angles on spring lines.

I should have mentioned that I already have a track cleat. At least once a month I stub my toe on it running past.
I'll look at your mods Terry.

I plan on taking the boat out this week and bringing it home for the winter.
Thanks
Don

Catalina Mark II Apponaug
Hi,

We have a 2005 Cataliina 36 and are having trouble fitting a midship cleat. We have tried all the standard cleats for a 1 1/4 size track and although most fit on our friend's 36 Catalina (2000), the holes in our track seem to be a bit smaller than other Catalina's. Has anyone run into this? Most pin sizes are 9 mm.

Thanks,
Michele
