Mid ship cleats

hi I am planning on installing mid ship cleats bolted on my fibreglass toe rail as I can't get track cleats in Australia from Catalina direct and I do not think the track cleats we'll hold up as a double springs in a perment slip in 40 knots . Has any one done this ? Some people say the is stainless in the fibreglass ? The other thing is the glass thick enough to support this with a backing plate ?
Any idlers would be great I have a Catalina 310 number 42
Cheers mat

Matt, I believe the toe rail would be difficult to enable a good backing plate to be installed below, simply because of the way the fiberglass toe rail and hull to deck joint is built, if it's anything like my boat.

What our skippers have done is to mount their midships cleats on a support of wood just inside the toe rail to raise them up and then bolt through to a much more accessible place below the deck.

Good luck.

I love the fold down cleat, what a great idea and you do not trip over it and do the over the lifeline belly flop or fall on deck moaning!

I used Schaffer track cleats with a 1/4 inch pin on my Irwin 41 (25000 lbs displacement). I was a live aboard on the Chesapeake Bay and cruised the U.S. east coast and Bahamas. The cleats worked well. When in an exposed slip with heavy wind I would run additional spring lines to the bow and stern cleats. Mid ship cleats are great for getting into or out of a slip. I would go with 4 bolt cleats for add ons.

Mat, you can also get the cleats from Garhauer: http://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=78
I assume they've got a distributor down there.
