Stu - Looked there, can you be more specific

Here's my semi-annual "give the person a little help" sermon/plea instead of go look at "some mindless link". While many people know that the associations can have some valuable information, the person that asked for help, here, either already checked there and didn't find what they wanted, or could use a little help navigating to A SPECIFIC PLACE ON THE ASSOCIATION WEBSITE WITH AN ANSWER TO THEIR QUESTION. Same thing goes for "Check the archives" as an answer. When I come across replies to real questions with "check the CxxxAssociation.com website", it really makes me wonder why you bother. Yes, the association websites are very useful. Is this site useful as well, in my opinion, and in that of many other, yes. Why continue to undermine the usefullness of this site? All that being said, I apologize for not having an answer for the original poster, and I hope Stu accepts the criticism in the spirit in which it is intended. There's enough bandwidth out there for both this site and the association sites to co-exist and serve valuable purposes. (Until next time......) Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

No problem, Tim,

however there's another side to this. I (we) have no idea who many of the newer posters are, and they may have no idea that the associations exist. Almost all of these types of "has anyone else done this?" questions really mean they still need to do their own research and homework. I have enough experience to know that what I can contribute, in my limited way, is based on what I've learned by looking, reading and researching. That said, if you re-read the question, it is almost boat-specific: "...'78 cat 30. the traveler is located behind the wheel. I'm thinking of moving to a mid boom traveler but i like have the sheets near me at the wheel so i don't have to keep running forward to adjust the mainsail. has anyone gone with mid boom traveler and run the sheets back..." I personally EVER haven't heard of or seen a C30 with end boom sheeting. ALL of the C30s I've ever seen have mid-boom sheeting and the biggest "complaint" and majority of the questions that repeatedly come up is the traveler system (i.e., old curved Nicro tracks, rotten sheaves and poor mechanical advantage, switching to Garhauer, etc.). But I'll bet the guys on the C30 website certainly may have seen what this skipper is describing. And that's where I'd look if I wanted an answer to that kind of question for a SPECIFIC boat. And it's his boat, so I believe he should do his own homework. Once he's on the C30 'site he can ask them, I sure am not in a position to do that for him. When we get to systems, like stuffing boxes, electrical, engines and the like, that pertain to almost any boat, then I'm pleased to share knowledge, retype the same thing over and over, but try to help more by doing exactly what you've suggested: here's the link, go read about it. I also, as many others have begun to do, suggest using the archives on this website, with recommendations for the actual words to search with. In this particular case, that's just not applicable. With due consideration, I may just change my "Try the Cxx Association website (including the link address BTW :)), to "Are you aware that a Cxx Assoc. website exists? If so, try here..." The reason I keep using the "Try the Cxx..." is that you'll notice that the computer keeps track of those new "titles" so I don't have to retype anything after the word "Try" and I simply select the size boat. Then I have to REtype the links everytime. Which, hey Phil, ya listening???, would be great if the Resources had a simple OBVIOUS right-up-on-top LINK to find the danged Association websites instead of being buried underneath "resources" somewhere on a drop-down. Rant over...:):):) Criticism always welcome, and thanks for your contributions here, too. :)
