Hi Nick, I need to bring my cruise book home from the boat -- but -- If you want to swim, try the Sassafrass or the Rhode Rivers. Both should be nettle free, even this time of year. If you have a GPS, try Reed Creek on the Chester River, hard to get into without a GPS. Last time I was there I showed 8.2 ft minimum depth on the way in. Sillery Bay is always nice if you like flags and horses, go all the way in. So my recommendation would be Rock Hall to Sillery Bay; to Reed Creek; to Rhode River (back by the islands); back to Rock Hall. If you like people and food, stop in Annapolis for one night then go to the Rhode River. While in the Chester you may want to try Gray's Inn Creek, I was up there for the 4th. Have a great Sail, Paul

Five day cruise

Rock Hall is one of our favorite places on the Bay. What a great place to begin a cruise. Here's a suggested itinerary, but it's always nice to go where the wind takes you regardless. Rock Hall to St. Michaels, then to Oxford, then across the Bay to West River, up to Annapolis and then back to Rock Hall. There are many other great spots to visit. Have fun.

Bay Cruise

The below suggestions or an itinerary are great and you can't go wrong following them. But here is a different one to consider: Rock Hall over to Annapolis (either to visit the city or to head up the Severn to Round Bay to anchor out); Annapolis to the Inner Harbour of Balitmore (again to stay at a marina or anchor out -- great place to visit). Inner Harbour out the Pataspco and up to Havre de Grace, also a neat little town with great transient facilities and restaurants. Havre de Grace down to Still Pond for a quitet night at anchor. Still Pond back to Rock Hall. I plan to do this trip myself later in August starting from Deale, about 20 mi south of Annapolis. Have great time!

Good call Tom

Rock Hall is a great place to begin and end a short cruise. An overnight in Swan creek is always delighful, a starry, starry night of anchor lights. Go out and around Love Point the first day south to St. Micheals and Oxford, and then across passing Thomas Point into the West River. Go up river to Pirate's Cove, drop the hook and spend the evening dining and dancing at Big Mary's at Pirates Cove. Next day head up to Annapolis and run Ego Alley, watch the fun and they'll watch you <G>, and moor off the seawall for another fun night. Transient slips in Ego Alley are generally inexpensive too. Hail the harbormaster. Water taxi will take you into town from mooring. If you can stretch the time, leave St Michaels and sail south to Bloody Point and across to Herrington Harbor before heading N to Annapolis. Back up to Baltimore light the next day, and back toward Rock Hall for a finale in Swan Creek. Nice....have a great trip! Jim

One more thing.....<G>

Carry a sharp blade to release the crab traps from your prop, and watch the shoals off Rock Hall. <G>

Lots of good advice already, Another option: Get a Cruising Guide to Chesapeake Bay; listen to the wind directon & strength predictions each morning and pick a destination within comfortable crusing range; it's a good idea to find a Marina with pool & showers & restaurants at least every other day in mid-summer. That last shot about a sharp blade to cut off crab traps -- if you can't avoid them, you're just not paying attention. They represent someone's investment in making a living, so if you must resort to 'cutting one off', please try to at least tie the two ends back together before you drop it overboard. Good luck if a waterman happens to see you cut one off!

Tolchester, wow, haven't heard that name in years....I seem to remember riding a carousel on the water there as a kid? Last I heard it is long gone, and a few of the old horses are still in a barn in Church Hill. Tempis fugit LOL

If you're out on Friday...

The Annapolis to Solomons race starts on Friday 7/15 around 7pm. There will be about 200 sailboats in the harbor.
