It monitors the battery systems through a shunt. The monitor comes with a shunt. It was very easy to hook up and wire. Make sure that you order the wire harness with it because that makes life much easier.
I originally installed a flush mounted Tappan (500 watt) microwave in the galley wall. It failed after two years and when I tried to buy the same microwave I discovered they had discontinued this model. I was able to replace it with Contour (700 watt) unit that fit once I cut out some fiberglass behind the galley wall as the Contour is slightly larger that the Tappan. The new Contour works great. I also installed a 1000 watt inverter so I can use the microwave underway. Check out this link to see the installation. http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/album.php?albumid=23
I use the George Foreman grill for meals for two people...otherwise, the BBQ on the back. No open flame..cooks in minutes..and very in-expensive...and not in use-can be stored elsewhere..
