I found all kinds of information on the internet from log books and stories of people sailing north Through the Yucatan channel but hardly any info. on people coming south. Does anyone have any experience coming South in Sept. or Oct. from Florida? I am planning on sailing, perhaps single handed from Miami to CanCun. I figured I would go Miami-Keywest, Keywest-Dry Tortugas, and then a quick shot into CanCun. Any suggestions, stories, ideas, comments ect would be appreciated. Thanks,Dan diverdan007@yahoo.com

in sept?

I'm just a dumb lake sailer, but Miami to Cancun in height of hurricane season wouldn't sound like the greatest decision to me. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Ditto Tom

I'm with Tom on this one. You might make it and be called a great sailor, but then again you might not make it and be called a statistic. Just joking!! I believe that you might be better off in December or January. Good Luck and have fun whenever you set out!!

hurricane season last from June 1 to Nov 1. we dont just quit sailing for 5 months. ;) keep an eye on the weather and you'll know about a storm atleast 7-10 days before it gets to you.

To Dan

Your point is well taken and if I were costal sailing in Florida I wouldn't either, it is beautiful down there any time of the year. Miami to the Torgugas wouldn't be a problem. Just guessing here, but I believe that it is about 1500 miles from the Tortugas to Cancun, maybe a little more. Unless he is talking about hugging the coast all of the way, he will be in open waters and in all likelyhood without T/V, weather radar or weather faxs for current weather updates. Even if he averaged 5 kts., it would be roughly a 12.5/24 hour day for him to get there. If he did manage to received information of a storm headed his way, chances are that he would have no where to run. My whole point was that it would really spoil his trip and that a safer time of the year would be suggested for an extended trip in open water. I was in Key West in April. Loved it!

Sounds Like a Fun Trip

But not untill mid October at the earliest. Looks like it would take every bit of four days from the Dry Tortugas. The gulf is very warm that time of year and the storms develop in the gulf and would not give you much warning. I would not want to be two days from a safe harbor that time of the year. Cuba may be a good interim stop if you do not carry a us passport.

To Isla Mujeres

Dan, I just (last night) received the new 2nd edition Mexico-Belize-Guatemala Cruising Guide by Freya Rasher. It is 380 miles from Key West to Isla Mujeres, the most popular check-in point for cruisers heading South. She says it will be 4 or 5 days, which is a long time weatherwise. I've made the trip from Pensacola in 6. My suggestion is to wait for the first good weather window in December. And even then, those Northers' that blow through the Yucatan Straight make the waves just like the Gulf Stream crossing to the Bahamas. Take care...and good luck!

Weather

I got some great responces and liked yours about having a weather window. I live in CanCun, 10 years now and normally using NOAA You can have a pretty good idea of when a storms coming. Doing 4 knots from keywest,350 miles its only 3.64 days. That should be enough should'nt it? Thanks again, Dan

Way Off Guess

I had an opportunity last night to check on the distance from the Tortugas to CanCun, boy was I way off. The principle theory is the same, just a shorter trip. I'm still in the opinion that unless it is a "have to" trip that it is delayed until better weather. Good luck with it Diver Dan, hope you have a good trip whenever you make it.
