I am going to ship my 35' Oday to a boatyard on the Miami River later this year. The boatyard doesn't provide any temporary berths and also I don't relish having to wait for all those bridges on the river. So I was thinking of rather than stepping the mast after launch, I would motor under all those bridges with the mast down into Biscayne Bay to a marina where I could put up for a few days and get things ship shape before beginning my cruise to the Caribbean. I've been trying to find a boatyard or marina that provides transient slips and that has a crane capable of stepping a 47' mast. So far searches of the internet and Waterway Guides have proved fruitless. Does anyone know of one around Miami that is not on the Miami river? Thanks

I looked on the web also this morning and you're right, it's not very helpful. Many years ago my skipper had dealings with Merrill-Stevens in Coconut Grove. They are no longer in business in the Grove, but they do have a phone # for Miami. If they can't help you directly maybe they can point you in the right direction. Miami River
The trip down the Miami River takes an hour tops. The thing to avoid is the morning, lunch and afternoon rush hour curfews for the bridges. When one opens, they radio to the next and it usully opens without you having to stop. I think it's 630AM-8AM 1130AM-1230PM AND 430PM-600PM The yard folks know the schedule. I do not know of a yard on the bay, they are all condos now! Good luck, welcome to Miami, Marc

i lived in miami for 10 years and every year during hurricane season rented a slip behind a house up the miami river... that way when i was out of town my wife would not have to worry with fighting the mangroves the trip down miami river was almost always enjoyable and not really difficult sorry i have been gone from paradise too long to recommend any specific yard

A couple of ideas
The Coconut Grove Yacht Club might put you on a mooring ball for a couple of days if you told them you are "a yacht in transit" (they do charge $). They do not have mast steping capabilites. I don't know if this will help but you could try the Marina at Scotty's landing in Coconut Grove. They have the high fork lifts used to store power boats one on top of each other in racks. Maybe you could work a deal with them. They are located by the Commisioner's offices. Same deal exists at Black Point Marina futher south on Biscayne Bay. A boat storage facility has the high fork lifts for storing boats. Black Point also allows boats to tie up to the pier ($) if space is available. I would also guess there are places on the Miami River with cranes.

I keep my boat in Miami for the winter only because it is closer to the Keys and I am able to go for long weekends. If I was to provision and prep a boat for extended cruising I would go to Lauderdale for the variety of yards and equipment stores.
