Metal through-hull & gate valves

Anyone know how to tell if the metal through-hull & valves have been changed? I recently bought a 1983 that seems to be taking on a little water near this area. I have the catalina direct info, but am still confused. The replacement valve looks like my current set up. Were the original valves metal or just the through-hull? Is the replacement through-hull not made of metal? Anyone had this hull fitting fail? Anyone changed them recently? If so, is this a job for a professional?

Dave: I also read about this valve in Catalina Direct and got concerned. Did you actually track down your leak to the through hull valve? Was it the packing? (The leak that I had, that I thought was near there, actually turned out to be from one of the cockpit drains above, and the water just ran down the hose, and into the bilge near the battery). I guess the fact that you didn't get an answer to your question about anyone having the fitting leak is good. I think there would probably be a difference between boats that were docked or moored in fresh or salt or brackish water. Let us know if you found your leak. You might be able to same us some time.
