messenger line?

What’s the best trick for attaching a messenger line? In this case I’m attaching two sane size lines and running them over a tight sheave. I'm trying to avoid that sinking feeling as resistance builds, and just a bit more will pull it through, and now its free. But is it all there?

Butt and sew together

For the case you cited, I butt the ends together and sew with some whipping twine to hold them together. Then I wrap the joint with a single layer of rigging tape.

Another suggestion

is to take a paper clip, straighten it out once and feed or hook each end into the lines and wrap in a single layer of rigging tape. This has never failed for me. Just my 2 cents. George

Yo George!

George: We use the paper clip method all the time. Quick/easy and has never failed us either. I am not sure that I would do this with a "messenger" line. The clip is going to be much larger than the line (if I understand Hal's question). It would appear that if you use the Paper Clip method on a small line, there could be several places to get hung up even if it is wrapped with tape. Sewing a smaller line together does seem prudent in this case.

Paper clip

I read about the paper clip method on this site and have used it successfuly many times.

Messenger line

Sew a small loop in one line. Then sew a small loop in the other line going through the first loop. Takes only a minute or two. I usually use waxed twine. Beauty of this method is that there is nothing to hang up and the interlocked loops pass easily over sheaves and you can use lines of different diameter. This is the way I replace running rigging and I mate the old line to the new one directly as there is no need to run a messenger line.

messenger line thanks

Thanks for ideas and link. By messenger line I meant any line that is used to pull another line through, guess it’s usually a smaller line. I have used the paper clip (although not rigged exactly like the pictures) and I think in my case the soft connection may pull more smoothly.
