Mesh screen in all 42 vents

There are mesh screens in all my air vents installed by Hunter in my 1996 42. I can hear the vents sucking air as it is now. Should those screens be removed? Or just kept clean with my trusty toothbrush?

Remove the screen from the holding tank vent

Screens are there to prevent trash, insects etc. from getting into the vent line and not only blocking the air flowt, but polluting the fuel or fresh water supply--which isn't a concern in the holding tank. So I'd remove that one. But since I don't want to be responsible for anyone's health or take the blame for contaminated fuel, I'll let you decide how much if any protection the screen is providing in the others and whether or not to remove them.

I removed the vent screen...

...from the holding tank vent because it was corroded and blocking air flow. A pair of needle nose pliers did the trick. I was amazed how bad it was clogged. Even though it was a s/s screen, it was still a mess. The screen on the fuel tank vent has remained clear. And the screen on my water tank vent "sucks air" when that tank is being emptied. It will spill out when the tank overfills, but creates a vacuum as the tank empties (??). Kinda wierd, huh?

Paul, if it's sucking air...

it can't be creating a vacuum. And if it were creating a vacuum, you couldn't pump any water out of the tank. However, if it's hissing, you might want to check for a kink or obstruction in it. 'Cuz it should be open enough not make any noise.

Mine makes a sucking air sound too

My 1996 Passage air vents also makes a sucking air sound too. Matter of fact all my air vents (water & holding tank) make that sucking sound. Even a small vacuum too.

They shouldn't, Jolie...

It's a sign that they're restricted in some way...tight bend, kink... You MIGHT hear a slight sound when a holding tank is pumped out, because the pumpout may be pulling a little faster than the vent can replace the contents (another good reason for larger vent lines), but you certainly shouldn't hear ANYthing from your fuel or water tank vent.

Vacuum develops with use.

I haven't removed the screen from my water tank vent, yet. I know it wierd, but occasionally I have to "bleed off" the vacuum in my fresh water tank by loosening the filler cap. After a shower or dishes a vacuum develops in the tank as the water is used. Obviously, this indicates a clogged vent. But, as I said earlier, when I fill my water tank and the water reaches the level of the vent hose, it will gurgle and exit the vent. It's almost like a one-way vent. Kinda strange. One time when I forgot to bleed it off and the pump began to labor as I was running the water. Soon as I bled it, it was OK. So I guess I'm talking myself into removing that one also - this weekend.

Vacuum in water tanks

I have a 1999 Hunter 450 and I have the same problem with one of my my water tanks. Water comes out of the vents when I'm filling them, but a vacuum still develops.

Wonder what Hunter says about this all

Wonder what Hunter says about this all, especially for Steve's NEW Hunter 450. Sure would be great if Steve checked with HUnter on this. Let US ALL KNOW!
