I have bought an old 1976 C30 with Merriman Holbrook winches - anodized aluminum I believe. One of the size 25 sheet winches spins freely the other is almost frozen - and both need to be serviced. I removed the circular clip and the large stainless washer and the two pawls on the top of the winch - I expected that the winch drum would then simply lift off revealing other gears pawls etc for cleaning and lubrication. But the drum won't budge. First, I assume from reviewing general material on winch servicing that this drum should lift off - is that correct? I haven't tapped it (or banged it) as yet to try and loosen it - nor have I tried to pry it up. Is anyone familiar with this type of winch and is there a step or trick to getting in to service this winch? Thanks for your help. Bob
