Fellow Sailors, My new-to-me 1985 Hunter 31 has a Merriman Pedestal. The portion of the pedestal "shell" through which the engine controls pass has shattered making shifting impossible. As you might expect, this happened while attempting to pull into a tight slip in strong winds. An awesomne experience for a new sailor! Does anyone know of a source for a replcement part or of a "fix"? Thanks, Greig Mitchell Cambridge, MD

Common problem

Unfortunately this is a common problem and nobody makes the part anymore. It was rumored that Edson purchased the old stock and it is now gone. I have seen one of these parts made of aluminum and was thinking about having a casting made over the winter if I can talk the owner into it. Perhaps Phil could find somebody to make the part like he has the steering brake. `In the past Edson has told people to buy a new system from them. Another solution is to purchase a single lever control and mount it on the pedestal or in the cockpit. Cheaper than replacing the whole system but not as convenient. Wish there were better solutions right now.
