Mercury in the automatic bildge switch?

I'm working on the bildge pump and automatic switch yesterday. I notice that there is mercury inthe switch itself. Waht's its purpose?

Its the switch

Mercury is an excellent conductor. When the switch tilts, the mercury contacts both wires, and completes the circuit. This provides a totally sealed contact, and no contact corrosion.
