All,

I just got an email from a friend who is anchored off of Anietyum, Vanuatu. He asked me the following question...

* Merc 5 HP
* The prop free wheels like the shear pin is broken but there is no shear pin. It is some sort of friction
* clutch--is there some way to adjust it or jury rig it until I can get out of the boonies?
* Holds on slow revs but slips like crazy at higher rpm.

Any one know any tricks for this? I do not have one myself and didn't find much with a Google search about it.

THANKS for ANY help!!

Greg

What I found on google. Doesn't look good for a quick fix though. Did he hit something?

http://www.justanswer.com/boat/6qdp4-30-hp-mercury-outboard-hit-something-water.html

"The inside of the prop has a rubber between the prop itself and the inside splines to act as a shock absorber, say if you were to hit a rock. that rubber had spun out and the splines are turning inside the prop. the prop is screwed. seen it 100 times before."

Perhaps knowing that he can epoxy the splines to the hub or something.

I've had something similar happen before. Once was the prop and once was internal in the shifting part of the foot. He can't sail it home?

This happened to me, too, on a Merc 15HP. Had to buy a prop - about $90. West Marine had it in stock!

Now I carry a spare prop.

No need for new prop; Solderblooms will re-hub for ~ $30. That said, a new prop will give him a spare (re-hub the old one).

I put 3 bolts through the hub to get home from the far boonies once, but you need to be VERY careful. It's all well and good to try to sail, but in my case there were several channels and 25 miles of canal in the way. I went slow.

I now carry spare props.

The motor in question is on his dink, not his main boat. And even so, he is in Anietyum, Vanuatu, about 5,700 Nautical miles from home. Just a bit to far to sail in a dink.
There is NO West marine, let alone mail system that is usable.:)

He just needs a temp fix until he gets to some place he can pick up a new prop.

I will pass on catsailor's tip. That might just get him a short time use of it. Thanks

Replacing the rubber bushing on a prop is not a do it yourself Job so hence no quick easy fixes. Would not recommend trying radical fixes which could damage the prop, spline or shoot sharpnel. I would recommend using a pair of oars to get to shore and back and curtail dink cruising until a replacement prop or fix is procured.

Thanks ....

Benny,

Thanks for the put. I will pass it on to him also.

I expect he has a better than average grasp of the situation. He actually built the boat they are on from a hull & deck. They have sailed it across the Atlantic a few times, gone through the Panama Canal and it now on his second year in the South Pacific.

I am sure he will replace the prop when he can. But that may be some time due to his remote location.
