Memorial Day is a day of national reflection and reverence, to honor the men and women in uniform who gave their lives in defense of our nation, its values, and our freedom. Memorial Day gives us a chance to stop and reflect on those brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great country. While there are many ways to observe the Memorial Day weekend, the true significance of this holiday should never be forgotten.

There will be a National Moment of Remembrance on Monday, 26 May, at 1500 (3 p.m.) local time. Everyone is invited to pause for one minute of silence in honor all those who have died in service to the United States during peacetime and war.

Remembering Dick Pershing, a US Army Green Beret Lt. who died when his detachment of special forces troops and Montangards was overrun by a North Vietnamese regiment around 1970.

All of us who have served understand that we may give our lives for our fellow citizens. Of the over 25 veterans in my family, only one died in the service of his country. Martin Ferster, my fourth great-grandfather, and a volunteer in the 15th Regiment of New York Militia, died in the First Battle of Cobleskill in the Revolutionary War on 29 May, 1778.
