This is final installment in our series about people you're likely to reach on the phone when you call SBO.

Phil is a guy who, when he puts his mind to something, can do anything. He is the perfect combination of left brain and right brain thinking. Just when you think he's the biggest nerd, he stuns you with his creativity and humor. He is perhaps the funniest guy I know and certainly the best business partner I could ever ask for.

Phil didn't grow up sailing or really even around boats, but was bit hard by the sailing bug in 1990 while on a cruise ship in the BVI. All those sailboats looked like a lot more fun than that giant, ponderous ship.

About a year later, with sailing lessons and a little time-share experience aboard an Islander 32, Phil wanted to experience a larger boat in warmer water. He talked the Moorings into letting him charter in the BVI (with a valid credit card it didn't take much persuasion). The charter went well, with hardly any property damage and no loss of life.

Phil returned from the BVI with twofootitis and an even greater desire to be part of the sailing community. So he bought his first sailboat, a Hunter 35.5 which he named Being There. He sailed it around Puget Sound for a few years until he encountered a Hunter Passage 42. "This," he thought, "is a boat I could live on." And he did, for the next four years, with his lab-mix, Sucia.

Phil had an ad agency at the time which was an early proponent of the internet. The agency had a T-1 line and a server and in 1996, frustrated with the lack of information online about his boat, Phil learned a little html and started the Hunter Owners Web, a simple forum. It was kind of an "if you build it they will come" project and the site started to gain traffic. Not long after he called me to say, "I think this could be the marine business we've always talked about," and we eventually grew HOW into today's SailboatOwners.com.

Phil thinks he has a brief sailing resume but has sailed all over the Northwest and the Carribbean. In keeping with the way he "puts his mind to anything," he decided the only way to really learn this sailing thing was to go it alone. So he embarked on a 7 week cruise, mostly single-handed, to Canada's Desolation Sound. It was a time of personal growth, reflection, and the sheer terror of docking a 42' boat in unknown places by yourself. Not for the faint of heart.

He later moved up to a Hunter 450 which he also lived on, eventually moving back ashore and dedicating himself to the growth of SBO.

These days, Phil is mostly at the helm of SailboatOwners.com. He lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife Kim, cats June and Cliff and dogs Joe and Rudy. Some of the site development is done during his daily commute on a ferry crossing Puget Sound.

Oh my, I'd have to dig deep into my photo box to find one of them. Just picture any 35.5 with a Navy blue dodger. I didn't really get into modifications until the 42. Loved that boat though, I think it's one of the best Hunter ever built.

Hello Phil, good to see your photo. Now I've a face to the name. Impressive that you managed to squeeze all the stuff I ordered into the flat pack box. I took it out to check and couldn't put it all back ..not that I need to. Cheers!

So that's what you look like.

Just kidding.

Always nice to see a face with a name.

Going to spend two weeks on Bainbridge Island next July. Hope you have nice weather for us.

You have created an online community that as resulted in long time, face to face friendships for which I'm grateful. We have sailed with TSBB members in many parts of the country and even a charter in the BVI's.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU ! for the hard work you put in on the site and also that you and your staff are very smart in doing this...as it is a very good thing to educate the potential consumers...as it eliminates a lot of confusion on both ends....

keep up the good work.....

Phil & Bly and Sailboatowners.com is the best company I've every had the privilage to deal with. I ran into Bly & Phil just after they opened for business and what a lucky contact that was for me. I was searching for an outlet for my book and chart but I was so used to getting a NO from every company I contacted that I though NO was my first name. Bly & Phil decided to take a chance on my products and over the years we've sold many thousands of books and charts together.

Here's the best part of our business relationship -- we never signed a contract or even had a hand shake. In fact, I've never met either of them face to face but I hope to some day. Our relationship was and is based on mutual trust of each other. How unusual is that in this day and age. We've never had a business disagreement and neither of us have failed to do what we said we were going to do.

I have seen pictures of Bly but never of Phil --- Bly's prettier!!!

No doubt about that. She's aged a damn site better, too!

I've been very lucky to meet (digitally, anyway) such wonderful people here, and so many of them. And how lucky am I to have a business partner who would write such a nice bio?

Phil, where would we be without your great website to guide us the fog of
night....Out here on the plains of Kansas there are not a lot of boat dealerships, certainly not sail at least and so your site is where I head first, nearly every day....It doesn't matter if I have a problem or not...it's just the
best way to start a day....Thank you for your help and hard work....May 2013 be a great year for you and your family; pooches and kitties..

Love sailing

Hi Phil, my first time on your site. I have been sailing almost thirty years. Had my first lessons with my late wife on a new jeaneau 23 tonic in shilshoe, then to the chesapeake, the east caoat keys caribean, bahamas then the summer of 1997 in prince william sound. After living 20 years in the interior of Alaska it was really nice to be back in Alaska and the sound was just fantastic but then back to North Carolina where we finally sized down to an island packet 27.We just had it really nice and outfitted really well for world cruising and my wife was diagnosed with ovarion cancer. That was the end of my sailing until last year when I bought a 2011 26M macgregor to go in lake pepin in minnesota (John 3:16) Thanks for all . Doug

Phil,
I'll add my thanks and congrats on a Great service to old and new sailors around the world. Your site has saved my butt more times than I can remember. Of course I wont remember your name tomorrow or mine the next, but it's great to see you "in the flesh", so to speak.
