I have a 1996 mecury 6.0 on my Hunter 23.5 that was working fine 2 weeks ago... then yesterday it would not start. (fyi about 6 months ago I had the carb rebuilt).

Could the wrong oil gas mixture be the problem? How hard is it to clean the carb? I would hate to tell the wife I need to spend more money on the motor again.

Thanks

Ethanol fuel

The new E10 gas is raising hell with small outboards. I had to have the carb cleaned and partly rebuilt TWICE on my 5 HP Nissan this year. The mechanic has advised me to run the gas out of the carb before I store it even for a week. So far so good. I use fuel stabilizer but that does not seem to help.

We have spark!

I pulled the plugs last night and have spark. I also cleaned the fuel filter and have fuel to the carb. I sprayed some carb starter/cleaner into the carb while starting and the motor did run for a few moments... When I kept spraying the starter fluid into the carb the motor would keep running.

So whats my next step?

Its a 1996 mercy 2 stroke, 6hp

Thanks

First,

Get rid of your current gas/oil mix. Get new clean (premium) gas and add only enough 2 stroke oil to make 100/1 mix.
Then (with new fuel) use starter fluid to get the engine to start (if possible) and keep it running by continuing to off and on spray starter fluid into carb until (hopefully) engine warms up enough to run on your new fuel.
If it doesn't you have to take the carb apart again and clean the tiny (clogged) venturi.
If it does run on the new gas, run it for 10-15 mins under full load. When you shut it down ALWAYS close (or disconnect) fuel and run engine till all fuel is burned thru carb... then pull the start cord a few more time while pulling out choke to get as much fuel out of the system as possible.
Your problem (and, it's a problem for all of us who have 2 stroke motors) is that if you leave fuel in the engine, it WILL "dry out" and clog the venturi and the motor will not start the next time you want to use it.
Good luck.

Sea Foam

look for some of this stuff and add it to your gas. I get mine at the local autp parts place I think Wally World has it too

Sounds like you have it whipped

Hello

Sometimes its not easy to find the culprit, usually its a tiny speck of dirt that finds its way somewhere in the carb. I'm no expert but I did manage to take off the carb of my Nissan 9.9, clean it with carb medic aerosol spray and put it back in place. Other things that I feel improved the reliability of the engine are; an extra fuel filter in the line, a little 'silkolene' pro-boost with every fill up and letting the motor stop without fuel when I'm finished for the day.
Happy sailing
Nicky
