hello sailors, i have a broken strand of wire rope and want to "repair" it the best way possible to minimize the possibility of getting cut. the only approach i've thought of is to cut the broken strand back as far as possible and wrap it with some tape. does anyone have a proven method of doing this sort of repair? thanks, ed

nope ...

You cannot effectively “repair”a wire rope with a broken strand. The rope’s strength will be reduced by more than the proportion of broken strands to total strands (due to loading geometry). Even if you could accommodate the strength reduction, there really isn’t a good (permanent) way to tuck the meat-hook back into the lay of the rope. Live with it, or replace it ... OMO Gord

meat-hook fix

I heard that you can put some tension on the wire and then rub a screwdriver up & down along the meat-hook. The repeated action will knock off the offending piece of wire. I used this successfully in the past on a wire halyard. It'll probably work just as well on standing rigging, but I agree with Gord... replacing the entire length is the safest bet. If it is your standing rigging, then you should consider replacing all the stays. Larry Morgan 382 "Sail-La-Vie"
