Measuring holding tank levels

I have a Pearson 303 and have installed new tanks for waste and water. The tanks are under the seats in the cabin and there is poor access to the sides and only 2" of clearance on the top. Can you suggest a guage that will work? Tanks are B145s from Tank Depot and are 11" deep.

Any suggestions are appreciated.l

The Profile gauges are the ONLY way to go.

Profile Tank Monitors

Do a search in the Head Mistress forum for tank level indicators, tank monitors, tank gauges...plenty of discussion about 'em, lots of people here have installed 'em and they ALL love 'em.

Profiles are very good. Installed one on my previous boat.

Present boat has a Hart Tank Tender and I am also very pleased with it's operation. One big advantage with this one is that it uses no electricity. It is also very easy to install. It only requires a very small hole(1/4" if I remember correctly) drilled in the top of the tank(at the deepest point)

Having installation and operating experience with both I lean slightly towards the Hart system.

Support for the Profile was excellent. Not sure about support from Hart as I never needed any.

Thanks for your help. Have spoken to Dennis and ordered exterior tank sensing system. May have to cut some bulkhead to insure a good installation but not too hard to do.

I've found that shinning a flash light onto the side of a plastic holding tank gives a pretty good reading.

Hart System mixed holding and drinking water measurements

I have an existing Hart System (looks like it was installed in 1990 or so) which is working very well measuring two water tanks and the fuel tank.

I am considering adding an additional "sensor" for the holding tank (actually I have two), I am a bit concerned about cross contamination if the holding tank was to have a plugged vent line and drive waste up into the sensor and back down into the fresh water tank.

It definitely sounds like an unlikely scenerio as I would have to hold two valves open at the same time or perhaps those valves are only one at a time.

The Hart website says there is no chance of this happening.

Anyone have thoughts on the subject?

Why do you doubt what the website says?

The pressure required to push waste up the air tube through the gauge and back to your water tank would likely first explode your tank. This is not even theoretically possibly unless you were pressing the two valves at the same time and pumping your toilet.

With tongue firmly in cheek, i rarely trust much of anything i find on the web at face value.

That said, i know that Peggy shares my concerns about cross contamination between drinking water and sewage.

I probably should have just sent a direct email asking her thoughts on the subject.

You can't send that stuff up the electrical wire ;-)

I am not too sure about a physical tube. Why make things complicated? If you don't have to drill - don't drill.

Hart System with Mixed Tanks

If I did not already have the Hart system installed on the other three tanks I would almost definitely go with one of the capacitive sensor systems.

The primary thing stopping me is having to drill holes in the boat for a new panel. If there was a capacitive system which hooked up to a NMEA 2000 system for example I would be happy as a lark as I would just run the computer program when I wanted to check the tank levels.

I do also have two holding tanks and only one remaining position on the sensor panel, it might be possible to have two of the valves, one mounted off the panel to get the second holding tank.

Nothing is ever easy ***Grin***
